The science of weight loss: How we gain and lose weight

Protein

Protein is needed to help build and repair the body and muscles and to make a range of vital enzymes and hormones. Proteins are made up of amino acids, 20 of which are absolutely essential to our health.

Amino acids can be described as building blocks that the body can arrange in thousands of different ways to make all the specialised proteins it needs. Eleven of these amino acids, our body makes itself – but the other nine (the ‘essential’ amino acids) come from food. Protein from animals is called ‘complete’ protein because it contains the nine essential amino acids.

Plant foods also contain protein, but are known as ‘incomplete’ protein foods because they don’t have enough of the nine essential amino acids (with the exception of soy protein, which contains complete protein). However, eating two or more plant foods together can supply complete protein. Some foods such as nuts and cheese can be high in both protein and fat.

Protein provides your body with the vitamins, energy and nutrients you need while keeping you feeling fuller for longer.
